Wuthering Heights - Chapters 1-2
Summary
The year is 1801. Lockwood, the narrator, has just arrived at his new home, Thrushcross Grange, an estate in the north of England. The estate's isolation pleases the narrator, who jokingly identifies himself as a misanthrope. Indeed, he claims to have managed to ruin a budding romance the previous summer through his detachment and unsociability. Lockwood makes an introductory visit to Heathcliff, the owner of Thrushcross Grange, at Heathcliff's house.

Heights will be left to Joseph and a young hired hand; the rest will be sealed. Lockwood cannot bear to look upon the happy sight of Hareton and Cathy together as they approach. Over Nelly's protests, he hurries out without a good-bye and stops at the churchyard on his way home. Looking at the graves of Heathcliff, Catherine, and Edgar, Lockwood wonders how anyone could imagine the inhabitants of "that quiet earth" not resting peacefully.
