Total War in the Twentieth century has proved to be an agency of social division rather than of national integration. Total War has been described as war which "draws from every political, social, economic and cultural sphere of a nation state" . The first major example of this is the First World War. It is not that total war causes either social division or national integration because in many cases it produces both. The social divisions were clearly present long before the First World War in both Germany and Britain but it does appear that these divisions were exasperated by war. However hard governments try to integrate countries these divisions will always show through.
