Two sons, both have fundamentally different lifestyles, but similar sins based in self-centeredness. Two groups of listeners, who on the surface appear very different, but are both living contrary to God. The application for the reader; most people have, to some degree, the characteristics of both groups inside of them. All can repent and receive the gift of grace. That is the beautiful message of this parable.
