In The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald uses the ideas of social status, the use of color, and eyes as clever symbols. Virtually anything in the novel can be taken as a symbol, from the weather, to the colors of clothing the characters wear. There are three main symbols used in the novel, The East and West Egg, the green light at the end of Daisy's dock, and the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg.

of ashes. They seem to represent in the story the eyes and almost the over looker that is your conscience and they seem to hold keys to people's ideas and thoughts. Symbolism is so important in this story and it seems to tie everything together and by the end of the novel a puzzle seems to have all the pieces and the picture looks so realistic that it leaves a lasting image inside your mind.
