The animosity of Jack Potter on the train, the drummer in the bar, and drunk Scratchy Wilson all contributed to Cranes effort to keep the reader in suspense by use of metaphors that often contrasted what the reader thought might happen next, but often did not. The suspense factor in this short story was furthered by the emotional, physical, and intellectual responses by the characters that were indeed under pressure in their own unique ways.
