Mysteries and uncertainties in day-to-day life have changed a lot since ancient times. The main reason for people following religion has remained exactly the same though. I believe this 'main reason' is to comfort their uncertainties and find answers to the many mysteries of life. and will continue to do so. I think the main difference between the Ancient 'Pagan' religions and the Christian faith today is the piety. Unlike 2000 years ago, the Christians do not fear their God. Where they can feel safe simply by believing God is present everywhere and will look after them, the Olympian gods had no sympathy for human life whatsoever. Therefore, the ancients would need to work very hard for a sense of security.
