The popularity of plastics in Finnish furniture design lasted from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s and Eero Aarnio (1932-) was at the forefront of the trend. In following with this sentiment, Aarnio began using polyurethane foam in the 1970's to create works like the "Pony" chair (1970) which have an almost animated character to them. In a recent article in The New York Times Aarnio reasserted the contemporary merits of plastic, stating that "Today's generation is born in the midst of plastic. Their first night is spent in a plastic bed in the hospital."
