He did not realize that he was helping to murder innocent people towards the beginnings of the trials, and tries to make up for this. He decides to follow his conscience instead of Danforth, which can be thought of as a wise decision or not. Though his attempt to save John Proctor failed, his intentions were good as he struggled to be brave and help the same people who he had formerly sentenced to death.
