At age twelve he was sent to work in Warren's Blacking Factory, a dark and decayed warehouse over-run with rats. This was where he had his first experiences of child labour. He found it startling that if you had money and was in trouble you could basically buy yourself out of trouble. Dickens was also very family orientated and believed that children were adults that had not grown up yet and should have been treated with respect and not given severe beatings as people seemed to believe was necessary.
